2011 USSSA National Championship Information

Read what experienced USSSA Member/Athletes are saying about their recent trip to Lakewoods Resort in Cable WI to check out how preparations for hosting the 2011 Dion Snowshoes U.S. National Snowshoe Championships are coming along!

I was very impressed with the work that has been done so far to host the USSSA National Snowshoe Championships.  The course that has been planned is undoubtedly going to challenge runners of all running abilities.  Those who think that Wisconsin doesn't have any hills are in for a dose of reality.  The rolling hills of the race site are both long and monotonous.  Even the start of the race involves a hill.  The site will be spectator friendly in that people wishing to see a loved one will have several opportunities to see their favorite snowshoer without moving.

The resort that the race will be held on also is going to be wonderful in providing housing to scores of racers.  There are many fun things planned for the weekend, including music, wonderful food, and a plan for a nighttime relay race set against the backdrop of luminaries lighting a course on the lake.  The race organizer has worked hard to make sure that everything is on track for a wonderful weekend of festivities.  Lakewoods Resort will set the bar for the new standard in what will be expected from USSSA National Snowshoe Championships.  The best part is, once you arrive at Lakewoods, everything is right there.

On Sunday I visited Lakewoods Resort near Cable, Wisconsin, with fellow USSSA members John Kahn and Jonathan Delf.  After exploring the lodge facilities and snowshoeing miles of gorgeous trails, I am completely convinced this is the best National race site yet!

At Lakewoods, the facilities are such that all of the weekend festivities associated with the National race can be held right on site, eliminating the need for athletes and their families to continually travel between event locations.  The start and finish of the race course are within walking distance of the lodge, making for an ideal set-up for racers and spectators alike.

Once athletes arrive at the lodge and check into their room (including a variety of standard hotel rooms and condos), they can register right on site, and then walk out the front door to preview the course at their leisure.  On Friday evening, the athlete reception and pasta dinner will be held in Lakewoodís banquet hall.  And after the races Saturday, the awards banquet and dinner are also being held right there on location.  Other amenities the lodge offers includes a full restaurant, bar & grill, small general store, indoor pool, hot tub, and locker room/shower facilities, for athletes who may not stay at the lodge.

While the inside offerings of the lodge are amazing, they are nothing compared to the vast trail systems found out the back door! We hiked a preliminary course that P.C. laid out, which was great! There is a large, wide open space to start off, which goes slightly downhill for about 250 yards, before narrowing down (to about three-four people wide), which is plenty of time for the runners to thin out.  The rest of the course incorporates a variety of hills and rolling terrain.  Depending on the final layout, this could be one of the most challenging National courses yet.  The snow conditions were also superb, with a thick snow covering on all the trails.  Adding to its beauty was the pair of bald eagles that flew overhead while summiting one of the higher peaks.

Overall, the course and facilities are exceptional, a combination that has the recipe for success!

Jon Delf, Kristi Speer and I met with PC at Lakewoods Resort yesterday and I am very excited to report that this year's nationals will be fantastic!

We were impressed by PC's knowledge of organizing a major event and he definitely has things under control.  With his staff and volunteers from some local clubs we can expect a first class event.  We mapped out a very challenging race course that all the racers will enjoy and it is very spectator friendly.

The Northern Wisconsin scenery is great and the lodge located on Lake Namakagon is fantastic.  The lodge has a large bar, lounge and dining room with a "Northwoods atmosphere" and 2 large banquet rooms on the ground floor for registration and the racer's banquet.  There are105 rooms (some next to the indoor pool) and also some condos which quite possibly could house all the racers.  The race starting line is within 300 yards of the lodge.  Once the racers arrive there will be no need to drive to the race course. This year's Nationals is the "Total package" and definitely one that a racer should not miss!
